An Afternoon in the Country

Anderson Creek Retreat and Cantaberry Restaurant would like you to come spend an afternoon in the country on November 6, 2010 for their fall festival. Set in the mountains of North Georgia, Anderson Creek Retreat is a beautiful setting to spend an afternoon and evening enjoying the activities and a special meal provided by Cantaberry Restaurant. There will be hikes, children’s games and activities from 3 PM to 5 PM. The band The New Familiars from Charlotte, North Carolina will provide the evening’s musical entertainment from 5 PM to 8 PM.

There is no admission for this event but a $25 tax deductible donation will go to benefit Gilmer Arts and Heritage and the Mountain Conservation Trust. Georgia Apple Festival

ApplesIt’s getting close to autumn and that means apple harvest. As the apple houses are gearing up for the season, Gilmer County is gearing up for this year’s Apple Festival. The 39th annual Georgia Apple Festival will be going on the 2nd and 3rd weekends in October – October 9-10 and October 16-17, 2010. Over 300 vendors will be there this year with many crafts and demonstrations as well as good eats! There will also be a parade and antique car show. The car show will be held on Saturday, October 9 at the Civic Center located on Old Highway 5 next to the Lions Club Fairgrounds where the Apple Festival is held. The parade will begin at 10 AM on the following Saturday, October 16.

The festival opens at 9 AM and closes at 6 PM on Saturdays and 5 PM on Sundays. Admission for the festival is $5 for adults, children under 10 are free. Parking at the fairgrounds is limited but there will be free shuttle buses available to take you from the parking areas to the fairgrounds. The shuttle parking areas will be at Gilmer High and Middle Schools, Ellijay Primary and Elementary Schools, and Mountainview Elementary School.

Gilmer County Fair

Ferris WheelIt’s that time of year again where the summer is almost over but the fun is not! Gilmer County Fair will be here August 10 – 14, 2010 at the Ellijay Lions Club located at 1729 South Main Street in Ellijay, GA. Join in the fun and festivities of carnival rides, games, craft and livestock exhibits, entertainment and tasty food. The fair will be open from 6 PM to 11 PM Tuesday through Thursday, and 6 PM to 12 Midnight on Friday and Saturday. Admission is $3 for adults, $2 for students.

Note: Originally it was announced by the Gilmer Chamber that children under 10 are free and you can save on the price of admission with any donation of a hearing aid, cell phone, or eyeglasses. A recent comment suggests that it is children under 6 for free and $1 off with the donation mentioned.

Picnic by the River

Cook OutJoin in the fun on Friday evening, June 18, 2010 at the ETC Pavilion on Legion Road in Ellijay for a picnic by the river. Bring your own basket of food and sit back for an evening of fun and music. Blue Ridge’s own Toccoa River Band will be playing a variety of music from the 60’s, 70’s, and 80’s. The gates open at 6 PM and the fun begins at 7 PM. The band will be playing until 9:30 PM.

The Picnic by the River is sponsored by Gilmer Arts and Heritage. Tables are $60 for members, $70 for non-members. Bring a lawn chair price is $8 for members, $10 for non-members. For more information and details, contact Gilmer Arts and Heritage 706-635-5605.

Farmers Market begins!

Fresh VegetablesThe Farmers Market will be open every Saturday from 8AM – 11AM beginning May 29th and going through September 4th. Come get your fresh veggies at their new location in the parking lot of the Gilmer County Courthouse.

Apple Blossom Chili Cook-Off and Car Show

antique carApple Country Auto Club is having a Chili Cook-Off, Swap Meet, and Auto Show on Saturday, May 22 starting at 8 AM. It will be held in the Gilmer County Courthouse parking lot. All you chili cooks out there come on down and bring your best recipe!

All proceeds raised by Apple Country Auto Club go to help support local youth groups & the GHS Auto Tech Scholarship Fund.
