Spring Fling

Bring the family out to the parking lot of Gold’s Gym in Ellijay, Georgia for the Spring Fling on Saturday, April 2, 2011. You can cheer your favorite teams on in the 5K race that starts at 9 AM and the Tot Trot that starts at 10:30 AM. There will be many fun things going on during the day including an auto show, pony rides, music, games and plenty of food. This event is a fundraiser being brought to you by Gold’s Gym and the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life.

Richard J. Tracey – Mystery Author

The author of mystery novel, The Fairfield Murders, Richard J. Tracey will be speaking at The Gilmer Center of Dalton State College on February 24, 2011 at 7 PM.

Mardi Gras in the Mountains

Mardi Gras in the MountainsMardi Gras in the Mountains will take place at the Chattahoochee Technical College in Jasper, Georgia on March 5, 2011 from 6:30 PM to 11:30 PM. This gala is a charity event with an evening of fine dining, good music, and a silent auction.

You can vote for King and Queen of the Mountains by making a donation. Each dollar you donate will count as one vote. You can see the nominees and cast your votes at mardigrasinthemountains.org. The winners will be announced at the gala.

This event is being hosted by Georgia Mountains Hospice, the Ellijay and Jasper Councils of the Knights of Columbus, and the Rotary Club of Jasper and proceeds will go to benefit these fine organizations.

Sam Olens visits Gilmer County

Newly elected Attorney General of Georgia, Sam Olens, will be visiting East Ellijay, Gilmer County, Georgia on January 15, 2011. He will be at Col. Poole’s Barbecue from 12:15 PM to 2:30 PM.

Bake Sales and Fundraisers

On December 11, 2010 from 10 AM to 3 PM, there will be a Toys for Tots Literacy fundraiser going on at Chic-fil-A in East Ellijay . Help a child in need during the holidays. For information contact 706-698-4877.

On December 11 and 18, 2010, stop by the Tractor Supply, 709 1st Ave. in East Ellijay where you can purchase some tasty baked goods and help raise money for the Pet Bowl Food Pantry. This organization works in conjunction with Meals on Wheels, helping to provide food for pets owned by elderly and disabled people who are on fixed incomes and have trouble providing for them.

On December 17 from 11 AM to 6 PM and December 18, 2010 from 10 AM to 5 PM, the Good Samaritan Catholic Church, 55 Church St., Ellijay, is holding their annual Cookie Walk in their parish hall. This fundraiser is to help them raise money for renovations for the church.

Apple Mountain Art Center

Comedy-TragedyTheater is coming to downtown Ellijay! Opening this winter is the new Apple Mountain Art Center. This theater is being opened by John Christian who has been running arts organizations in Cobb County for over 20 years. The theater will have a 180 seat auditorium, a 24 foot movie screen, a dance studio, a fine art studio, a portrait studio, and rooms for lessons in art and music. There will be a gallery with art and antiques for sale along with a full concession area serving ice cream, coffees, and other tasty treats.

A Christmas Carol will be performed by the Apple Mountain Playhouse on December 10, 11, and 12, 2010 at Ellijay Elementary School. Showtimes are Friday and Saturday evening, 7:30 PM and Sunday matinee at 3 PM. Call 706-502-4292 for more information.

Thanksgiving Feast

ThanksgivingIf you have no particular plans for Thanksgiving this year, you may want to consider going to the Martyn House for their Farm to Table Thanksgiving Feast on November 25, 2010 from 3 PM to 6 PM. Author and Chef Heather Antonelli is back by popular demand. There will be many tasty traditional and international delicacies on the menu.
